Symposiet Photography Today, Tomorrow erbjuder alla fotografiintresserade en storslagen upptäcktsfärd i samtida fotografi, sett från en mängd perspektiv. Med presentationer i dagarna två av fotografer, forskare, teoretiker, kritiker, konstnärer, svenska och internationella, utlovar vi ett sannfärdigt fyrverkeri av erfarenheter, kunskap, uttryck, frågor och idéer om och med nuets fotografiska praktiker. Symposiebesökaren garanteras ett sällan mött innehållsrikt utbud vad gäller fotografiska bilder.
Symposiets två dagar har olika fokus och innehåll. Under Dag 1 diskuteras dagsaktuella teoribildningar om fotografi, fotografins estetik och filosofiska perspektiv på det fotografiska mediet. Centralt i symposiets upplägg är att teoretiska bidrag samspelar med fotograf- och konstnärspresentationer. Under Dag 2 tar vi del av forskningsprojekt och presentationer som undersöker och resonerar kring olika aktuella former för fotografisk kommunikation, kring hur vi använder fotografier idag. Ämnen inbegriper, bland mycket annat, undersökningar av en rad digitala kommunikationsformer, av amatör- och yrkespraktiker på nätet, och av fotografiets bruk och roller i sociala medier. Även under dag 2 är dialogen mellan forskare/historiker och utövare/praktiker/fotografer/konstnärer viktig. Sammantaget ger symposiet en ytterst bred bild av nuets fotografiska kulturer, av fotografi idag, imorgon.
Photography Today, Tomorrow utgör slutfasen i projektet Plattform Fotografi, den mångsidiga genomlysning av samtida fotografi som genomförts med Centrum för Fotografi som huvudman och Stiftelsen Framtidens Kultur som bidragsgivare. Plattform Fotografi har hittills genomfört en mängd programaktiviteter, bl.a. en lång rad föreläsningskvällar som innefattat presentationer av åtta nationers samtida fotografi, fem seminarier med tio inbjudna föreläsare från olika aktuella genrer och yrkesgrupper i dagens svenska fotografi, en omfattande enkät till svenska fotografer, en livaktig och informativ hemsida, fyra månadslånga bloggdiskussioner där olika aktuella fotografiska teman ventilerats. Och nu som final: Ett tvådagars symposium med närmare tjugo bidrag och presentationer om den fotografiska bilden idag, sett från utövares, brukares och forskares perspektiv.
Plattform fotografi genomförs av CFF i samarbete med Bildmuseet och JMK. Projektet finansieras av Stiftelsen framtidens kultur. Symposiet Photography today, tomorrow arrangeras i samarbete med Moderna museet.

The symposium Photography Today, Tomorrow offers a grand tour of discovery through the world of contemporary photography. With presentations by photographers, theoreticians, philosophers, researchers, artists, critics, we promise a true plethora of experiences, knowledge, expressions, questions and ideas about and with photographic practices of the present. The symposium visitor is guaranteed rich revenue in terms of the complexities and rewards of photographic images.
The days of the symposium are organized with differing focus and content. During Day 1 contemporary theories of the photograph, the aesthetics of photography and philosophical perspectives on photography are discussed. Central in the program is the encounter between artist’s contribution and theoretical presentations. Day 2 focuses research projects and presentations which examine and articulate forms of contemporary photographic communication, the variety of contemporary uses of photographs. Topics include, among others, examinations of digital forms of exchange, amateur- and professional practices involving Internet, the uses and roles of photography within contemporary social media. Also during this day the dialogue between researchers/historians and practitioners/photo-graphers is crucial, noting that, certainly, theory and practice always overlap. Altogether, the symposium offers an extensive panorama of the photographic cultures of the present, suggestive on those to come.
Photography Today, Tomorrow constitute the final phase of the project Platform Photography, the many-layered examination of contemporary photography that has been carried out under the auspices of the Stockholm-based Center for Photography and made possible through a grant from the Foundation for the Culture of the Future. The activities of the project has consisted of, for example, a long series of evening lectures/presentations including the review of contemporary photography in eight European nations, seminars devoted to five different genres within historical and present-day Swedish photography, four month long on-line discussion on a variety of current topics as well as a lively net site with member inquiries, portfolios, etc. And now this symposium as the finale: A two day event with twenty contributors on contemporary photographic practices, seen from the perspectives of practicioners, users and researchers.
Platform Photography is produced by CFF in collaboration with Bildmuseet and JMK. The project is financed by Foundation for the Culture of the Future. The symposium Photography today, tomorrow is organized in collaboration with Moderna museet.
